Friend Makin’ Mondays: 10 Things That Make Me Happy

Yes, it is Wednesday, not Monday. But I want to make sure I blog more, so I’m going to jump in! I’ve been off Paleo, and I think I see more of what it offered me off it than I did when I was on. I never felt that different as I was on it, but I think any changes were too gradual. Being off it has been different. I haven’t gotten back on the horse completely, but I’m getting there.

Ten Things That Make Me Happy

1. Tiffany & Co. I love Tiffany blue so much I painted my bedroom that color. I love Tiffany jewelry. My husband bought my engagement ring there because I told him how the diamonds sparkled differently. Sure, it’s expensive, but not only are the styles timeless, they are just a little bit quirky. Enough to make them awesomely original. Every time I go to a new Tiffany store, I go get my rings cleaned. And they are really nice to me, even though my rings aren’t giant by any means.

2. My cat, Tess. She’s the best. She’s my constant companion. She’s a mini me. She’s a diva. She’s trouble. She’s my daughter. I can’t even begin to tell you how much she means to me.

The cutest kitty.

3. Alpha Phi. I’m not only a proud member, I’m happy to be serving at San Diego’s Alumnae Chapter President. This organization has given me so much as a college student and as an alum.

4. Lifting heavy weight. I get a special kick out of really killing the heavy lifting days. I’m not fast, I’m not coordinated, I’m not graceful, but I’m really, really strong.

5. Tennis. I’m so happy on the court. I have no idea why I don’t play more often.

6. Being home in Maine. I love California, truly. But I’m so happy when I’m at home in Maine. I miss my parents and I feel very connected with myself when I’m there.

7. The ocean. I’ve always loved it. It never fails to calm me down when I’m anxious. I don’t think I could ever live far away from it again.

8. Music. I’m not talented at all when it comes to music, but I love to listen to it, and I love that it makes me feel things.

9. Friends. I’m lucky to have great people in my life. I thought my college friends were the best, and they are. I learned how to keep surrounding myself with the best people. My San Diego friends are my urban family.

10. Last but not least, my husband! We’re currently living in a commuting situation at 2 different parts of the state, but we’re making it work. He’s my best friend, my partner in crime, the person I trust the most in the world, the guy that drives me crazy in every possible way. Going on 12 years together, it has yet to nearly get boring.

Friend Makin’ Mondays: Let’s talk about TV.

How ironic! We’ll be talking about TV while I’m up in Palo Alto with my husband who doesn’t have cable! Yes, it’s Netflix life here. I am going to bang this blog out a little fast because I’m super tired. I slept poorly last night (excited for a race) got up early to race, and then had too much to do to take a post race nap!

Let’s Talk About TV

1. Share your current “Must-See” TV shows. Right now is kinda of a bad TV time in the calendar. I’m still Keeping Up with the Kardashians and I’m enjoying American Ninja Warrior and The Hero. I just finished 666 Park Avenue, which makes me sad because it was cool and creepy and then got cancelled.

2. Do you prefer reality shows or sitcoms? While on the surface, I prefer sitcoms, I don’t think the quality is really there for the most part. There is nothing like The Cosby Show or Family Ties! So, I’m drawn more to reality if I had to choose. But my fave unscripted TV shows are thriller/adventure/mystery things.

3. Who is your favorite talk show host? I don’t really watch many talk shows, but I think I’ll pick Dr. Drew! No doubt Anderson Cooper is awesome as well.

4. Which network(s) do you turn to for news? CNN and Headline news. I also try to watch as much local news as possible. My mom instilled in me at a young age that it’s important to know what’s going on in the world and in your town.

5. Do you have Tivo or DVR? If so, which programs do you have set to record? I think it’s only set for American Ninja Warrior currently! It’s slow in the summer. I use the Primetime on Demand feature a lot so I don’t have too many things on the DVR. I’ve been watching old My Cat From Hell episodes that I taped, too.

6. Have you ever started watching a show simply because you heard so much about it on social media? If so, which one did you watch? Downton Abbey for sure. It helped that I had friends that absolutely wanted to share it. Way back before most social media, my friends from an online game got me interested in LOST, which is definitely a favorite of mine.

7. List any TV series that you own on DVD. LOST, The Osbournes, Roswell, Nip/Tuck, Firefly, Gossip Girl, Greek and an oldie: Voyagers!

8. Do you have a subscription to Netflix, Hulu, etc? We have Netflix streaming at both home bases, on AppleTV. I love the AppleTV. I love that I can play my iTunes library, bring in my Photo Stream, and watch You Tube and control it with my phone.

9. If you could star in a TV show that already exists, which one would you choose? Vampire Diaries, so I could hang out with Ian Somerhalder! I’d like to be a sassy vampire like Lexi, only not so dead.

10. If you could bring back one TV show that is no longer on the air, which one would you choose? That’s hard, really hard, because so many shows I like have been cut down in their prime. I’m going with Journeyman. It was a great time travel, fix the past, kind of show. It had a lot going for it. Setting the time period with music was so great. The story was just starting to heat up with us learning more about why the main character jumps in time… when the axe came down.

Friend Makin’ Mondays: Easy Answers

I have been lucky to have had my husband home for 4 whole days! And no plane delays! No minor accidents happened before he arrived! Alas, he is back in NorCal for the week, but I’m soldiering on with the Whole 30. Day 17 is complete!

Easy Answers

1. Are you a planner, or do you prefer to see where the moment takes you? I like to have a rough idea of what’s going on, but overall, I do like to fly by the seat of my pants and see what happens. There is so much you can’t control in this world, you might as well go with it and enjoy.

2. How often do you blog? I’ve been trying to blog twice a week. My biggest hurdle is photos. My blog design needs to have a featured image and sometimes I just don’t have one.

3. Do you color your hair? Oh my, yes indeed. Happy to say I only have 1 gray hair, but I’ve been kicking up the color for longer than I haven’t. Currently rocking a strawberry blonde ombre look.

4. If you had to choose between running or riding a bike, which one would you choose? Probably riding my bike because it would be faster!

5. Have you ever traveled outside of your home country? Yes – I’ve been to Italy, Greece, Great Britain and Canada.

Here I am at 15, going on 16 in Vatican City.

6. Do you like weddings? I do like weddings! I like to dance at receptions, cry at ceremonies, see the pretty dresses, and try wedding cake.

7. What is your favorite guilty pleasure on TV? Totally Keeping Up with the Kardashians. I love them.

8. Are you good at math? I’m good at basic math, definitely not math in my head! I never understood Calculus, but I was pretty good all the way up through Trig.

9. What is the last movie you watched? We went to see World War Z last weekend. I liked it, and I usually don’t like zombie movies because they are too scary.

10. Share five adjectives that your friends would use to describe you. Honest, loyal, chatty, funny, and weird.

Bonus: Did you celebrate Independence Day? If so, what did you do? We had a couple of our close friends over. I grilled meat, made a salad and sweet potato fries. (Everyone eats Paleo at my house!) We sat around watching crazy YouTube videos on the AppleTV until the fireworks started, and then we walked upstairs to our bedroom, went out of the patio and watched 2 shows at once. I live near 2 resorts that do their own and we have a great view! Plus, no parking, no crowds, no bugs. It’s pretty great. Last year we watched one from the hot tub because it happened to be on another night than the other.

The Internet

1. Have you ever met anyone online before meeting them in person? Yes, I have. Back in the late 90’s at my college it was a very acceptable way to meet people, through our school BBS. I’ve also met people I’ve played online games with and through my husband’s work in virtual worlds/games I met his future coworkers online before he was hired and then we met them all in person.

Here's a dirty secret - I've played online games for 10 years or so. Not so much anymore, I'm kind of busy with all the other stuff real life has to offer.

Here’s a dirty secret – I’ve played online games for 10 years or so. Not so much anymore, I’m kind of busy with all the other stuff real life has to offer.

2. What is your opinion on social media’s impact on our society? Does it make life better or worse? It’s both. I think that it’s great to be able to be so open, and to be able to connect so easily with people from around the world, or people you may have lost touch with. But, I have to say I’ve been absolutely shocked at the statements people make online – even if I’ve known them forever! The dark side is the veil of anonymity allows people to have no filter and no regards for the impact in what they say. I think the manners and cordialness we pay one another face to face is very valuable, and to have that stripped away is kind of heartbreaking. Is it exposing the worst of humanity? Encourgaing it to get worse? I can’t say, but it make me very uncomfortable.

3. Do you believe that it’s possible to fall in love with someone that you’ve never met in person? I don’t. I think you can learn a lot about one another without meeting, even getting past the awkwardness faster and learning important personal details that may take longer to elucidate in person. But at the end of the day, it’s chemistry and timing. And chemistry is often only a face to face thing.

4. Do you prefer to shop in stores or online? I prefer to shop in stores when possible. Online shopping makes some things much easier and sometimes cheaper to find, but I love poking around shops. Feeling items with my hands and seeing their actual size and seeing the items in context is very important.

5. What blogging platform do you use? (WordPress, Blogger, something else?) I use WordPress. I’ve played with Blogger and Tumblr, but I prefer WordPress.

6. Have you ever blogged for another site? Would you? I’ve contributed to my husband’s blog a few years ago. I’ve also written a guest post for a friend’s beauty blog after I went to a warehouse sale and took photos. Last year I contributed a column to a website dedicated to an online game. I have no problem with contributing for another blog as long as I have something to say.

7. Do you use services like Netflix and Hulu? I use Netflix. It’s a great way to catch up on TV series. It is frustrating that there are not more newer movies available for streaming. I love just being able to find a movie I’ve heard of but missed and catch it on a random night.

8. Would you prefer to get blog comments or to interact on twitter? I love blog comments because it means someone actually read what I have to say! But, I do like using Twitter for interacting. It’s way easier for me to comment back or answer a question on Twitter.

9. Do you prefer to read books or e-books? Both are fine, but unless I’m traveling, I like real books. Maybe it’s the smell.

10. Share at least one experience that you would not have had without being a blog author. Well, I’m certainly not a very notable blog author. I did miss a chance to do something cool. I was contacted on my blog to test and review a product, but I dropped the ball on that and missed out. Perhaps in the future.

Friend Makin’ Mondays: 10 Simple Questions

Yo! It’s that time again. Things you never thought to ask me! Back for another round of Friend Makin’ Monday. Tomorrow I have news to post about my recent developments.

If you’ve taken part in FMM then you know the rules. Ten Simple Questions

1. When you looked at yourself in the mirror today, what was the first thing you thought? I honestly can’t remember looking in the mirror this morning! It was probably a thought about my hair as I changed the elastic position from pineapple ponytail for sleeping to pull through bun for showering.

2. Do you prefer to pay for things with cash or plastic? Plastic. Way easier. I hate change, I don’t have room for it in my wallet and it smells funny.

3. What is one word that you use too often? “RIGHT!?!” This is totally my fault. 2 of our friends say this all the time when you say something they agree with, and my husband and I started saying it to each other gently in jest. And guess what? It took. Gah!

4. Who is the last person outside of your family who said “I love you” to you? Probably my dear friend Amber over text. The two of us have been in a support vortex lately with each other.

Letter writing

5. When was the last time you wrote a letter to someone and mailed it? Probably, Amber! She was my college roommate and since then we always have written letters to each other when we are apart. Sometimes they are epic letters with many pages, taking place over a series of days. It’s just our thing.

6. Have you ever been called upon for jury duty? I’ve been called to the jury pool, but not selected for service. Here in CA, you WILL get called, along with hundreds of other people on the same day. On my day no trials started so all of us went home. It was like a bizarre waiting area in an airline terminal.

7. How many keys are on your key ring? Just 4, an d 2 dongles. Car, mailbox, house, storage area. I don’t like lots of keys on a ring.

8. List two characteristics that you want to change about yourself. My employment status would be a good change and maybe the state of my fingernails? I know this is weird, but this is what I came up with!

9. Do you bring your own shampoo and conditioner when you travel, or do you use what the hotel provides? I use WEN, so I bring that in a special little travel bottle that squeezes it out perfectly. My hair only sees shampoo when I go to the salon. I’ve been a WEN girl for 2 years now, and my hair has never looked better.

10. What is your birthstone? Do you like it? Mine is a diamond and of course I like it. But, it’s also annoying because it’s a diamond and it’s expensive! And if you got a birthstone ring, it looked like an engagement ring. I like colored stones too. I always wanted emerald or ruby when I was a kid.
