Speed bumps happen to the best of us.

I’m at home in Maine for awhile.  All in all, this trip is lasting 3 weeks.  It’s been really hard at times to live across the country from friends, family, and where I grew up.  I’m more and more of a Californian every day, but I am still a Maine girl.  Definitely one of the biggest reasons that I am a Beachbody Coach is so that I can have the flexibility to be somewhere other than home in San Diego and still do my job.  My parents are getting older.  My friends have kids I want to know.  Social media lets us maintain relationships with people we knew in our pasts that we want to keep building.

Heading up for a walk.

Heading up for a walk.

I thought I prepared so well for this trip.  I packed plenty of clothes (probably too many).  I brought stuff to work out in. I brought a bunch of Beachbody program DVDs.  I brought tons of Shakeology.  I brought the new Beachbody Performance sample pack.  I fully intended to do my business from wherever I was.

Guess what?  $hit happens. I haven’t been on the ball.  I’ve managed some great walks and I’ve been to spin classes, but I haven’t been able to work my program remotely.  If it’s not a DVD player that isn’t hooked up, it’s a TV that’s in constant use for crime dramas.  These speed bumps don’t add up to much more than excuses and yet here they are.

Without getting in to much detail, there’s been some pretty heavy stuff going on with my family.  I’m dealing with it as best I can, but I have found myself sliding back into some dark places and some bad habits.  My disordered eating has been scratching at my brain.  It’s a comforting way to deal with stressors.  Only, it’s not that comforting. I see the patterns starting to form and this has been the first day I’ve been able to successfully pull the brakes on it.  No doubt, by telling 2 people close to me about it, separately, it made it real and it made my brain wake up a little.

I can only change what’s happening now and I can only try my best and set myself up for good things down the road.  I think that it means, I need to leave my time with my parents and get to a more neutral space where I can map out my own plan for the rest of my time here.  I need to not fall apart.

I accept, whole heartedly, than I am not perfect.  This isn’t any more than most people handle.  I can do this. I just have to remind myself of it and get on the right track.

My number one priority in life is my health.  MY HEALTH. I need to serve that priority in everything I do.

Friend Makin’ Monday: Quick and Random

First of all, thanks for all the feedback on the “Tales of my Fitness Past” series of posts. I’m not done yet, but it’s been a great experience for me to write about it, get the photos together and process stuff from the other side.

For my own fitness – this week hasn’t been great. I’ve picked up the mythical Southern California Common Cold. Ugh. I’ve been taking it easy to get rid of it, but I’m looking forward to hitting it hard when I can breathe out of my nose again. Hopefully that is tomorrow.

My Fitbit went for another joy ride in the washing machine last week. Luckily, 2 days in a plastic bag full of rice and we’re back in business. My sleeping has been crap lately, so hopefully with the Fitbit I can get some data on when I’m waking up.

I’m very excited for another round of Friend Makin’ Mondays!

If you’ve taken part in FMM then you know the rules. If you’re new, please take a moment to answer this week’s question on your own blog then add your link in the comments section here at: http://www.alltheweigh.com so we can all see your FMM questions and answers. Please invite your blog readers to add their links here too so everyone has to opportunity to be seen. The idea is to connect with other awesome bloggers so take a moment to post your own FMM post and comment on a couple of other posts. Now it’s time for this week’s topic!

1. Choose three songs that would be on the soundtrack of your life. “Goody Two Shoes” – Adam Ant, because I really am a rule follower.  “Center of Attention” – Guster, is pretty much the story of my life.  I’m the stereotypical only child.  “Last Train to Trancentral ” – the KLF, because that energy is what I try to bring to whatever I do.  I’m always striving for that.
2. Share the details of one project that you’re currently working on.  I’m working on getting our office under control.  We down-sized our office space with every place we’ve moved and even though we’ve gotten rid of things long the way, there’s just not enough room to have the stuff and be able to work.  The space is small, and we have the sleeper sofa in here so it can double as a guest room.  Guess what, the sofa gets covered in my crap.  I think I’m going to set up a modular shelving unit in the hallway outside for the stuff that just won’t work in here but we have to be able to access easily.
3. If you could learn to do one thing overnight what would it be?  I’d love to be able to sing.  I’m pretty bad.  My cat bites me when I sing, no joke.
4. If you could be a fictional character which one would you be? I really can’t think of a good answer to this.  There’s been so much drama in my life, that it makes fiction look boring sometimes!
5. What’s your favorite thing about the month of October? When I lived in Maine, I’d say, it was the changing color of the leaves.  Now that I’m in California – probably Pink for October.  Breast cancer research and awareness is an issue that I really care about, and I’m glad that the word gets spread, even if the proceeds don’t always get back to where they should go.  Anything that reminds women to get themselves checked and to do self exams is a good thing.
6. Share one TV show that you’re embarrassed to admit you watch.  I love Keeping Up with the Kardashians and all of the spin-offs.  I think Khloe is one of the funniest people ever.  Despite the fact that they are wealthy people leading a fabulous life on TV, I think they do work hard and they do give back to the community.
7. Name one friend that you’re thankful to have in your life today.  I am always thankful for everyone in my life, but I just got back from brunch with Michele.  She’s been a dear friend since we were 14.  We’ve been through a lot in our lives, together and apart.  She moved out here to SoCal this summer and it’s a gift to be able to see her most every day.  She understands me in a way many people don’t, and we have the same sense of humor.  It’s nice to have someone laugh at my jokes all the time!
8. What was the most relaxing part of your weekend?  I got to do some “gardening” yesterday.  I’ve been in the process of repotting the plants that have survived me and  my brown thumb.  I hope I can keep them alive for awhile.  I’m kind of guilty because one was sent to me (in the mail!) by my mom (it was one of her own) when I first moved here 4 and a half years ago and it isn’t looking so great.
9. Do you like to dance?  I love to dance.  I probably look ridiculous, but it’s very fun.  I got to dance the night away with a friend at a wedding this summer.  It was awesome.
10. Share one thing that you’re looking forward to before the end of the year.  I’m looking forward to stepping up my training.  If I’m going to do the triathlon next year, I’d better make sure I can handle the bike and road portion!  I’m not worried about the swim at all.  Well, I haven’t tried the swim in open water or in a wet suit, so maybe that’s not true.

Friend Makin’ Mondays: Inside your home

It’s tough to get on early enough to take part in FMM on the West Coast! But I’m going to keep trying!

The rules from Kenlie:
If you’ve taken part in FMM then you know the rules. If you’re new, please take a moment to answer this week’s question on your own blog then add your link in the comments section here at: http://www.alltheweigh.com so we can all see your FMM questions and answers. Please invite your blog readers to add their links here too so everyone has to opportunity to be seen. The idea is to connect with other awesome bloggers so take a moment to post your own FMM post and comment on a couple of other posts. Now it’s time for this week’s topic! Inside Your Home

1. Do you live in an apartment/condo, townhouse or house? I live in a condo, but it’s townhouse style.  I’m in the second unit in, so I do have shared walls on 2 sides.

2. What is your home’s coolest feature? Aside from the Hollywood Glam bathroom (which is awesome, but mostly due to my decorating) – my favorite feature about the place is the spiral staircase to the second floor.  I always have wanted to have a spiral staircase, since I was a little kid.

3. Do you enjoy DIY projects? If so, what are you working on now? I do enjoy them.  I’m just lousy about the execution.  Our last home improvement project was adding lights under our kitchen cabinets.  We got a  kit from IKEA and it turned out pretty great!  I still want to try and make my own tile mosaic back splash behind my stove.   I just don’t have a lot of room, so I think I’d have to make it on a board and then mount it to the wall.

4. When using the dishwasher do you use powder detergent or liquid? I use those little pouch style guys from Finish.  I think I usually get Finish Quantum.  I’ve found it to be the best at cleaning and not leaving spots.

5. Do you have a TV in your bedroom? No.  I firmly believe in keeping TV out of the bedroom.  I hate having it on when I’m trying to sleep, and I believe the studies that show it’s harder to get to sleep if you’ve just watched television or been on the computer.  I like dedicating my bedroom to sleeping, reading, and of course, other activities.

6. Is your range gas or electric? Electric, but at least it’s the sealed glass top kind.  I miss gas stoves and I think it heats better, but there is no gas in my whole community, so what can you do?

7. How often do you sweep/mop/vacuum? Not nearly enough.

8. What is your favorite place to shop for home furniture and accents? I love IKEA, but World Market is also really awesome.  I love their stuff.  I do have a lit of a modern vibe to my decorating taste.  I’ve recently discovered Z Gallerie and I’m pretty much in awe of their stuff.

9. Do you decorate for holidays? Usually.  There was one year when it just didn’t happen.  I still want to get a real Christmas tree sometime, but I don’t want to bring in any more spiders.

10. If you could have HGTV come in and redo one room in your home which room would you choose? Probably the kitchen.  It’s small and has original cabinets, it’s the room we are working on slowly to upgrade.  We replaced the appliances already, but I’d love to have the cabinets refurbished, replaced or wrapped.  Also the big fluorescent light has GOT to go.  We want to remove all that and have can lights in the ceiling and hopefully remove the drop.

I got really crazy when it came to planning the layout for the office/guest room. I actually made a scale room with scale furniture footprints that I could move around. It all worked out though!
